PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

The Holiday Party was a success on all counts.  The food was very good thanks to Larry and Judy Maggie, Millie Kellogg, and all the other people who brought in dishes.  Thanks to Gordon Rockhill for providing all of the props (Christmas tree, table clothes, etc.).  We also had a successful silent auction with merchandise provided by Craft Supply, which was arranged and facilitated by Barry and Laura Uden.  The ornament raffle worked very well except for the uncanny success of Tom Howard in drawing his own name time after time, after time, after time.  The gift exchange was great.  The quality of the gifts were excellent, they were well made, and reflective of the skill of the people.  Congratulations to all.  Thanks to Rich Winslow for arranging the church.

The first quarter has lots of good stuff going on.  Most noteworthy is the David Elseworth demonstration on March 8th at Ken Clifford’s shop.  Please mark this on your calendar.

In January we will have a basic skills class, tool making with a principle project to be a depth gauge.  If time permits, we may also try to fit in a hook tool or other project.  In March, the plan for the basic skills class is a sharpening workshop.  Remember that the basic skills programs are on Saturday mornings on the date indicated on the calendar contained in this newsletter.

You might ask why we are doing these basic skills programs again.  The answer is that we have a lot of new members since we last gave the programs, and one of our principle purposes is to teach fundamental skills to beginning turners.  The fact of the matter is that at some level, we are all beginners and hopefully everyone gets some benefit from these basic skills classes.

I would like to call your attention to the fact that the April Wood Carvers and Wood Turners Show is on the horizon.  As the calendar shows we will have a presentation at the February monthly meeting to stimulate your thoughts and hopefully some activity for the show.  It would be nice if we could have more participants and more turning entered in the show again this year.
